California is not one climate, and it shows

Salt air on the coast
Within a few miles of the ocean, salt corrodes roller bearings, hardware and fasteners. Coastal doors tend to seize suddenly rather than wear gradually, and unsealed parts fail years early.
Dust and grit inland
In the valleys, the Inland Empire and the desert, fine dust packs into tracks and mixes with lubricant to form an abrasive paste. It grinds rollers flat and chews the rails they run on.
Relentless sun
UV makes vinyl, weatherstrip, glazing bead and screen mesh brittle well before their rated life. Sun-facing elevations lose their seals first, which is where the draughts and fogged units show up.
Ground that moves
Seismic activity, expansive clay soils and ordinary settlement rack openings out of square. A door that hung perfectly for a decade starts catching in one corner, and realignment is the fix.

Questions we get every week
My sliding door is really hard to open. What is wrong?
Almost always the rollers underneath the panel have worn flat or seized, so the door is dragging its own weight along the track instead of rolling. It is the most common repair we do, and it does not mean the door needs replacing.
Can a foggy window be fixed without replacing the whole window?
Yes, in most cases. The failed sealed glass unit is replaced inside your existing frame. The frame, trim and hardware all stay exactly where they are.
My windows are 1970s aluminium. Are parts still available?
Usually yes. Mid-century aluminium sliders are everywhere in California and we can source or adapt rollers, latches and balances for most of them, despite what you may have been told.
Do you repair or only replace?
We repair. We do not sell replacement doors or windows, which means we have no reason to recommend one when a repair will hold.
How much does a repair cost?
It depends on what failed. Rollers, hardware and rescreening sit at the low end; glass and track work cost more. You get a firm price on site before we start, and the estimate is free.
How long does it take?
Most roller, track, hardware and screen jobs run one to three hours and finish in a single visit. Glass is cut to your opening, so that needs a short return trip.
Is my sliding door a security risk?
It can be. Sliding doors are the most common forced entry point in California homes. A worn latch or a panel that lifts in its track makes it easier still, and both are straightforward to put right.
